years ago. just go with that. >> that is first lady michelle obama and ann romney offering their advice to their husbands. president obama heads to colorado today. mitt romney has been here since monday night. with me now is former colorado governor billowens. the second of three colorado governors i have on my show today. let me start with the same question i asked governor hickenlooper. why is colorado a swing state? what do you tell friends and families and colleagues when they ask what makes colorado such a right down the middle state? >> it is one of the best educated states in the country in terms of college graduates it is the best educated state in the country. we really are a microcosm of the country. a lot of coloradoens came from other states. and so it's a nice place to battle out the country's elections. and as you probably pointed out earlier we have gone all sorts of ways in presidential elections. we have elected democratic governors. i think the coloradoens take a look at the candidate and vote for the person they think will do the best job for colorado and the country.

? >> let me give you the answer. first of all, for two years, president obama cut support of u.s. assistance for democracy and civil society in egypt, so those who went to tahrir square saw that the united states wasn't on their side. that was a mistake. two, when the revolt began, joe biden said that mubarak was a democrat. the secretary of state said we're with him and he's a reformer. by the time the u.s. took its position, the demonstrators had been in tahrir square for days, there had been police crackdowns and when we said it was time for mubarak to go, the the reformers had been begun to be crowded out by extremist elements. yes, there's a big difference between anticipating and leading versus not leading, reacting, cutting our traditional support for democracy. that's the record of president obama and that contributed to the mess. >> so, you're saying he should have pushed mubarak out, but done it differently or he shouldn't have done that? >> the people in a country, reagan once said that we should support the march of freedom, but we can't determine its pace. the peop

and this is a reality show where obama and romney will meet in the first time in nearly five years before their biggest audience of the campaign. the first 2008 presidential debate between the president and john mccain got seven times the audience of the highest rated 2012 republican primary debate. think about that. seven times. past debates show romney and obama have to worry about cut away shots that are less than flattering. in the past both candidates have come across as irritable, patronizing or disengaged. this was chris christie's advice to the candidates yesterday. >> what you do is go out and be yourself. and people either like it or don't. if they don't, they are going to vote for somebody else. not a tragedy. no one dies. >> finally speaking of debates, there was a barn burner last night in massachusetts where scott brown and democratic challenger elizabeth warren faced off in a debate. moderated by nbc's david gregory. it was tense from the outset. >> if you're going to comment on my record, i would at least have you refer to it -- excuse me. i'm not a student in your classroom. please let

. four years ago there were 15 states that barack obama and john mccain were advertising in. now it's down to nine. you know, so you're getting same amount of advertising dollars squeezed into nine states. almost overearn gaugement with with the battleground states. >> the battleground map has dramatically decreased. we're in fewer states. you're not seeing, for example, the obama campaign talked about maybe we'll go into arizona or texas and georgia. they didn't. the obama campaign had long been looking at pennsylvania and michigan. they didn't. remember, in florida eight years ago we were talking about democrats playing missouri and even west virginia at one point or throwing money down to get the other side to spend money or compete and while republicans were looking at places like washington too. where's new mexico? >> robert, one of the things john cohen head of the polling team said it is fascinating the split between the engagement of young voters in swing states and voters in non-swing states. that's where this is being waged. that's where we need to check with enthusiasm.

the next debate in new york for team obama. and of course, it all happened right here in battleground, colorado. it's a state that's been trending quickly from red to purple in recent years. will the first debate keep it from going blue again for the president and going back to red? good morning again from the university of denver. thursday, october 4th. 2012. this is "daily rundown." i'm chuck todd. a big hour ahead, including daily reaction from orrin hatch, governor martin o'malley and many more. let's get to the first read of the morning. in what may be the most substantive debate in the era of televised presidential debates. mitt romney performed as if his campaign depended on it, while a surprisingly subdued president obama allowed his challenger to dictate the terms of the debate. from the start, romney displayed confidence and demanding the presence on stage. he oned up the president on his own wedding anniversary shoutout. >> i want to wish you, sweetie, happy anniversary. >> congratligss on your anniversary. i'm sure this was the most romantic place you could imagine, here w

sports. >> i voted for barack obama. i thought he would be a centrist. i really lost faith in him. i'm supporting mitt romney. he is a no excuse kind of guy and i think over the last four years we've heard enough excuses. >> bottom line question for romney is this. does his debate performance move the needle in the three big midwestern battleground states of ohio, iowa, and wisconsin? the romney campaign is clearly still wary about the toxic effect of the obama campaign's attacks on his personal wealth and also the damage of romney's own 47% comment. yesterday hailed as a hero in denver romney repeated one phrase he introduced on wednesday night, again and again and again. >> i saw the president's vision as trickle down government. trickle down government. trickle down government. trickle down government. trickle down government. >> that trickle down government phrase looks like an attempt to neutralize attacks on his tax plan as just one more version of, quote, trickle down economics. romney did some major cleanup work yesterday on the comment that had been the most damaging to his
